N4 Elementary Japanese Language

The N4 Level is an elementary stage in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), designed to help you communicate in daily situations with basic fluency and accuracy. At this level, you will be able to understand and use familiar expressions, participate in simple conversations, and read and write short texts such as emails, messages, and descriptions. N4 is suitable for beginners who want to enhance their communication skills for everyday life, travel, or casual interactions.

N4 covers fundamental grammar patterns, including basic verb conjugations (masu and te forms), adjective conjugations, particles, and sentence structures. You will learn to form affirmative and negative statements, questions, polite requests, and simple commands. This level also introduces basic conjunctions and transitional phrases to express reasons, time, and conditions. You will also expand your vocabulary with approximately 300 new kanji characters and everyday expressions for various scenarios, such as shopping, dining, and travel.

This level emphasizes reading comprehension, enabling you to understand simple texts such as short narratives, advertisements, directions, and social media posts. You will learn to identify main ideas, extract specific information, and understand straightforward messages, making it easier to navigate daily reading materials. In listening, you will be able to follow basic conversations, short announcements, and simple questions, even when spoken at a natural speed in standard Japanese.

N4 also focuses on speaking and writing with basic accuracy and fluency. You will practice introducing yourself, asking and answering questions, describing people and places, and talking about daily routines. You will also learn to write short sentences and paragraphs, such as personal letters, diary entries, and social media updates, using correct grammar and vocabulary. This level also teaches you to use polite language for respectful communication in social interactions.

By the end of the N4 course, you will be able to communicate comfortably in everyday situations, including shopping, ordering food, asking for directions, and socializing with friends. You will also be able to understand basic conversations and express your thoughts clearly, making you well-prepared for the N3 level, where you will achieve intermediate fluency and handle more detailed discussions.
